Rebbe Elimelech of Lizhensk
1717-1786
Successor of the Maggid of Mezhritch;
Who succeeded the Baal Shem Tov, founder of Chassidus
Rabbi Elimelech became one of the leading figures of Chassidus. He taught that the spiritual heart of Chassidus is the tzaddik, or rebbe, who can intervene in Heaven on behalf of his followers, and bring about blessing and salvation, in the merit of his piety and Torah. Great Chassidic rebbes served as sage, advisor, and spiritual leader to their chassidim their followers; and were known for their ability to perform miracles on behalf of Jews who sought their counsel and blessings.
